A Series of Mythological Narratives

by: Ashley Beerdat

Mythological Narratives is a series of paintings created through the process of searching. Ashley believes we are all searching for something meaningful but often, we’re not sure about what that “something” is. Ashley treats each painting as an individual story that unfolds when the viewer seeks to find meaning. While the work explores concepts of climate change, evolution, dreams, and the environment, these mythical worlds also hold hidden stories for the viewer to uncover.

About Ashley Beerdat

Ashley Beerdat is an emerging artist of Guyanese descent who grew up in Brampton, Ontario. Ashley uses painting as a creative outlet to narrate mythical stories based on her childhood, dreams, and life experiences. The narratives do not follow a specific tale – rather, Ashley treats each painting as an expedition and takes bits of information from each in search of hidden meaning. Ashley’s work toys with the line between imagination and reality.

Northbound: Who is Lady York, Anyway?

Northbound: Who is Lady York, Anyway?

Who is Lady York, Anyway?

By: Alessandra Pozzuoli

Who is Lady York, Anyway? is a multi-media exhibition that uses Lady York Foods (an 60 year old Italian grocery store in North York) as a focal point to discuss larger daily rituals surrounding family, the individual, consumerism, food, and home in Italian culture. Alessandra uses the grocery store to analyze the long history of Italian immigration to Toronto, and namely, how different generations come to understand each other.

About the Artist

Alessandra Pozzuoli is an interdisciplinary artist. As a Canadian of Italian heritage, her work is influenced by notions of ethnic identity, gender, rituals stemming from popular religion, folk culture, and the importance of grandmothers. Through repetitious work using paint, stencils, fabric, and found materials, Pozzuoli creates patterned scenes and curated collections that disrupt perceptions of sacred and secular within the context of the (Italian Catholic) home.

Date: February 27 – April 14

Possibilities of Dialogue: Evolve! Workshop Performance

Possibilities of Dialogue: Evolve! Workshop Performance

Possibilities of Dialogue – Workshop Performance

Co-created and performed by TOES FOR DANCE Co-Director David Norsworthy and NYC-based dance artist Marielis Garcia, Possibilities of Dialogue is an exchange of energy and awareness.

Inspired by the parallels between making a dance and having a conversation, the performance is an abstracted collaborative creative process; moments of listening, curiosity, disagreement and spontaneity unfold through movement and text. It is often playful, lively and physically virtuosic, sometimes uncomfortable, sometimes surprising and almost always responsive to and inclusive of the audience. Audience members are welcome to observe and interact through the invitations that are offered.

Possibilities of Dialogue is the second workshop performance part of NYA’s Evolve! Performing Arts Program.

Part of North York Arts’ Evolve! Program. Co-presented by TOES FOR DANCE and a DanceWorks CoWorks Series Event. Produced with the support of the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council. We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. Nous remercions le Conseil des arts du Canada de son soutien. Special thanks to Dance Initiative (Carbondale, USA), Kaatsbaan International Dance Centre (Tivoli, USA), ArtsOnSite (New York, USA) and Inception to Exhibition (New York, USA) for supporting the creative development of this work!
