Conversations In Flux: Visible presence unfolding in time and space

Conversations in Flux consists of three multimedia, multidimensional sculpture and paint installations,  used to animate evidence of a visible black presence in North American Landscapes.

The objects, constructed with wire and paint, are bent and shaped into various forms depicting black populations inside and outside of hyper-visible and invisible states of blackness. “My concern as a visual artist in the area of visibility requires that I examine how black subjects maneuver between the points of hyper-visibility and invisibility, to get from one point to the other, you have to move”, said Lurch.  “Marking visibility and making art requires me to envision the black subject visible in time and space”.

Inside Out

Information Package

For its 10th edition, Nuit Blanche Toronto will be bringing acclaimed artist JR’s Inside Out project to North York and eight other locations. This project consists of taking  candid portraits of local residents in a photo booth truck, printing out the photos in a large format, and helping to install them in public spaces. Participants will be part of a social phenomenon that over 250,000 people from more than 120 countries have participated in! North York Arts is excited to invite artists, students and residents from the surrounding regions to participate for this event.

The Installation

Nuit Blanche staff and JR’s production team will arrive in the morning with a truck that has a built-in photo booth and large format printer. Participants will have their photo taken, and then bring their 3×5 foot print to the location where it will pasted onto Mel Lastman Square. A number of locations in the square will be used, including the walls by the band shell and the walkways.

For the safety of our participants, all prints pasted 6 feet above the ground will be installed by a Nuit Blanche staff member.

Participants will be asked to first sign a form that allows for JR’s staff to use your photo in other installations around Toronto, and to host the image on the INSIDE OUT website. Photos will not be used for any other promotions or advertisements.

If traveling with a group of 5 or more, please connect with Ely to confirm your time of arrival

Upon arrival at Mel Lastman Square, please check in with Ely before lining up to have your photo taken!
Look for signage to check in near the INSIDE OUT truck on Yonge Street.

The installation will stay up for approximately 7-10 days, during and after Nuit Blanche.

Can I volunteer with you? Will it count toward my school volunteer hours?
Yes and yes! We would love for you to get involved. Please email Ely for more information.

Is there a minimum or maximum age limit?
People of all ages and backgrounds have participated in this international installation, including infants!

Is the glue used to paste the photos harmful or toxic?
No. The Glue used is an all natural wheat based paste, which is easily washed off afterward.

What You Will Need

Clothing that you are OK getting a little dirty in! Any glue that might get on participant’s clothing is water based, and will come off easily in a washing machine. If you do not want to paste your photo, a member of the production team will be happy to help.

If you are volunteering, we recommend wearing closed toe shoes.

Your enthusiasm! The more animated these photos are, the more vibrant the installation will be.

The Mad Lyricist

Songwriting Series for Youth

Oct. 7th – Nov. 25th, 2014

Every Tuesday from 4 – 6pm

York Woods Library (1785 Finch Ave.)

**Registration is required, space is limited.  To register contact laura@northyorkarts.org

Program Description:

“The Mad Lyricist!” is a workshop series that will teach the art of songwriting to a group of youth ages 14-18.  Under the mentorship of songwriter and musician Enuma Messam, the program will take on the format of a “creative lab” where participants will have a safe and engaging space to experiment with various songwriting and musical techniques. The 8 week program will incorporate many writing exercises and the use of small instruments for the youth to share their art within a “jam circle”. This hands-on approach will not only demonstrate the importance of how “words” can influence “sound”, but will also give the youth the opportunity to develop performance skills and build confidence to express themselves in a group setting. The adventurous and collaborative nature of the series will strengthen the participants’ artistic abilities, enhance their sense of agency, and inspire them to pursue their creative endeavours.

About the Artist:

Enuma is a vocalist, composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who plays an organic blend of r&b, Afro-soul, folk rock, and jazz. The name Enuma means “the heavens know” in Igbo and as an artist who has settled in the multicultural landscape of Toronto, she has sung in 6 languages and proudly draws from her Jamaican and African roots for inspiration.
Enuma has taken huge strides in her young career. She is a member of award-winning musician Waleed Abdulhamid’s band, the Waleed Kush African Jazz Ensemble, and she has worked with other acclaimed musicians like Shamakah Ali, Wade O. Brown, and the afrobeat band Asiko. In addition, her music has been played on CIUT 89.5 FM and she has graced the stages of iconic venues and festivals such as Live Green Toronto, Redpath Waterfront Tall Ships Festival, Markham Jazz Festival and Afrofest.
As an arts educator, Enuma has hosted music circles and facilitated workshops with such organizations as Nia Centre for the Arts, St. Alban’s Boys’ & Girls’ Club, For Youth Initiative, and North York Women’s Centre. In her endeavour to promote the art of live music, Enuma has successfully organized shows to spotlight independent artists and is the founder of “Womyn of Indigo”, a collective of female musicians and poets. Enuma and the “Womyn of Indigo” have founded the “Acoustic Flow” workshop series, which teaches young women how to play instruments, write songs and compose their own music.
Enuma has quickly developed a repertoire that connects with people from all walks of life, and a reputation for staying true to herself, her community, and her art without compromise. She is taking steps to share her music across Canada and abroad: join her on her journey.
