Place: Studio Theatre, Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge Street

Fred Hersch has performed with his favourite trio , bassist John Hebert and drummer Eric McPherson since 2009. Praised in a New York Times Sunday Magazine feature as “singular among the trailblazers of their art, a largely unsung innovator of this borderless, individualistic jazz—a jazz for the 21st century,” he balances his internationally recognized instrumental and composing skills with significant achievements as a bandleader, collaborator and theatrical conceptualist.

Hersch’s influence has been widely felt on a new generation of jazz pianists, from former students Brad Mehldau and Ethan Iverson to his colleague Jason Moran, who has said “Fred at the piano is like LeBron James on the basketball court. He´s perfection!”

North York Arts kicks off the 2016 year of programming with a theatre co-production of HUFF, starring Cliff Cardinal directed by Karin Randoja.

Huff, first developed at Native Earth’s Weesageechak Begins to Dance festival, is the story of Wind and his brothers, caught in a torrent of solvent abuse while coping with the death of their mother. Wind’s gas-induced dream world bleeds into his haunting reality as he’s preyed on by Trickster through the hallways at school, the abandoned motel he loves more than home, and through his own fragile psyche. Huff is the recipient of the 2012 Buddies in Bad Times Vanguard Award for Risk & Innovation and playwright Cardinal was just named this year’s winner of the RBC Tarragon Emerging Playwright Prize.

NATIVE EARTH PERFORMING ARTS is Canada’s oldest professional Indigenous theatre company.
